The 'What' and 'Why' of Green Design |
|
|
|
|
Green Design is an approach to the design of: - New or renovated spaces
- Residential, commercial or industrial
- Designed, constructed, operated and demolished in an environmentally responsible and energy efficient manner
Why Green Building Design? Buildings consume one third of all U.S. energy and two thirds of all U.S. electricity as well as vast amounts of resources, creating significant amounts of waste and pollution over their lifespan. Green design seeks to prioritize environmental and life cycle considerations in all facets of building design, construction, operation, and maintenance. Green building design has many benefits such as: - Reduced energy and environmental impacts.
- Lower life cycle operating costs.
- Improved occupant health, comfort, and productivity.
- National recognition for exemplary green designs.
- Educational value to the wider community (teaching sustainability).
- Community pride.
Sustainability…What is it ??? The World Commission on Environment and Development suggests it is…”meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Substainable design is the process of designing for sustainability. This requires awareness of the full short and long-term consequences of any transformation of the environment.
